Tagore Library: A Brief Profile

Introduction

Tagore Library is the Central Research library of the University of Lucknow. It is here that the academic fraternity- both the preceptor and his pupils could find intellectual food. It is respected as one of the oldest, well organised and richest libraries of India. With the advent of Information Technology, this library is also changing its traditional format.

LIBRARIAN:

The Tagore Library is presently headed by  Prof. Kamal Kumar, Department of Political Science  who is the Honorary Librarian.

COLLECTION OF THE LIBRARY:

The Tagore Library houses not only books, but also has a good collection of rare manuscripts, paintings, art objects, ancient coins, theses and research journals.

LIBRARY ANNUAL GRANT: The annual grant of Tagore Library is Rs. 25 lakhs, sanctioned by the State Govt.

WORKING HOURS: The working hours of the Library are from 08:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m.

HOLIDAYS: The Library remains closed on Sundays, National Holidays, Gazetted Holidays and other holidays declared by the University.

ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC JOURNALS AND DATABASES

Since 2004, access to scholarly electronic journals and databases has been made available to Lucknow University by inflibnet through U.G.C. – Infonet E Journals – consortium. More than ten thousands full text electronic journals & databases are available to research community of the Lucknow University through inflibnet website (www.inflibnet.ac.in) or publisher’s web sites directly.

Recent events organized by the Tagore Library:

  • Organized Book Fair from 17th January to 20th January, 2013 in Lucknow University.
  • Celebrated foundation day of the Tagore Library on 4th March 2013
  • Celebrated Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s birthday, father of Library Science in India on 12th Aug. 2013
  • Celebrated National Library Week during 14-20 Nov. 2013. Organised special lecture programme on 18th Nov. in its auditorium on the occasion of National Library Week.
