Let us talk about puppetry in the introduction of folk arts, the history of puppetry is very old. In Panini's Ashtadhyayi, the mention of puppet drama is found in Natasutra. Some people refer to the mythological legend about the birth of puppets that Shiv started this art by entering a wooden idol to amuse Parvati. The story 'Singhasan Battisi' also mentions thirty-two effigies of Vikramaditya's throne. Today this art has reached many countries like China, Russia, Rumania, England, Czechoslovakia, America and Japan etc. In these countries, contemporary use of this method has given it a multidimensional form. Apart from entertainment, puppets are being used in many fields like education, advertisement etc. Maharashtra is considered to be the birthplace of puppets.
Drama, which has been a part of Indian folk culture, is counting its last breaths today. It cannot be said exactly when the practice of dance started. But the mention of dance in the royal courts is also found in Hindu scriptures, tales and stories. If we talk about the ancient Indian society, then Abhigyana Shakuntalam, Vikramorvashiyam and Malavikagnimitram are three famous Sanskrit plays by one of the Navaratnas of Vikramaditya, Mahakavi Kalidas. In the folk theater tradition, Tamasha of Maharashtra, Bhanvi Natya of Gujarat, Saurashtra, Yaksha Gana of Karnataka, Kuddiyattam of Kerala, Oj Pali of Assam, Bhand-Pathar of Kashmir, Nautanki and Raas Leela of Uttar Pradesh Bihar, Drama and Ramlila of Bihar, Anikya-Naat of Bengal and Orissa, Arab-Pala of Manipur, Gauri-Khyal of Rajasthan, Ranbhalyam of Goa and Kala dance of Madhya Pradesh are famous.
