The Institute was established in the ONGC Centre for Advanced Studies during 2017, in collaboration with the ONGC Foundation, New Delhi, as desired by the ONGC. For active collaboration between the University of Lucknow and the ONGC an agreement was signed and ONGC provided financial support for the construction of the building of ONGC Centre for Advanced Studies in the campus of University of Lucknow. The Institute initiated two new courses w.e.f. 2017-18 session viz.,
- M.Sc. Applied Geology (with specialization in Petroleum Geosciences) (25 seats).

This one-year (two-semester) full time Post Graduate Diploma program was initiated through International Collaboration with Multi-National Company the Bedrock Mineral Resource Consulting (BMRC) and equipped with the salient features of a world class education, delivering using relevant material and teaching resources. Oriented towards preparing geologists for today's world, visiting faculty/ lecturers from BMRC are guiding the enrolled students through Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), Data Verification, Exploratory Data Assessment, 2D interpretation, 3D interpretation, and Mineral Resource Estimation. BMRC, an International Geology & Mining Consultancy Firm launched this course at the University of Lucknow. The enrolled students worked on the state-of-the-art software like DATAMINE for Mineral Resource Modelling and open pit design.
A pool of committed BMRC consultants along with visiting professionals/guest lecturers helped the participants develop relevant skills and qualities, along with functional competencies essential to the mining world. The participants are being groomed to develop decision making and problem-solving skills by leveraging appropriate course content and teaching and learning methods.
The University understands the importance of Institute-Industry collaboration for better job opportunities to students and in order to meet out the specific need of the Resource Geologists in the National/ International market, this two-semester diploma program was initiated. For this purpose the University has signed a MOU with a Dubai based Multi-National Company ‘Bedrock Mineral Resource Consulting’. It has opened a broad spectrum of opportunities for the students and the faculty to interact with international experts.
